MECHANISM OF ACTION
Selank is a short peptide built from a piece of a natural immune-signalling protein, with a small addition to help it last longer in the body. It is studied for mental calm through gentle activation of the brain's main calming system (GABA, the same system targeted by diazepam and similar drugs), but through a different spot on the receptor. It also is studied for serotonin activity in the thinking and emotional centres of the brain, and studied for its effects on BDNF (the protein that supports brain cell health). Research shows it does not cause drowsiness, muscle weakness, or memory problems, which are common limitations of older sedative compounds.
RESEARCH APPLICATIONS
- GABAergic pathway research
- Serotonin turnover studies
- Non-benzodiazepine site characterisation
- Cognitive performance research models
RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
Non-sedating profile in models
2010Behavioural research models report activity without the motor impairment associated with benzodiazepine-class compounds - the reason it is studied as a distinct mechanism. Research observations only.
