MECHANISM OF ACTION
Selank is a short peptide built from a piece of a natural immune-signalling protein, with a small addition to help it last longer in the body. It is studied for mental calm through gentle activation of the brain's main calming system (GABA, the same system targeted by diazepam and similar drugs), but through a different spot on the receptor. It also is studied for serotonin activity in the thinking and emotional centres of the brain, and studied for its effects on BDNF (the protein that supports brain cell health). Research shows it does not cause drowsiness, muscle weakness, or memory problems, major issues with most prescription anxiety medications.
RESEARCH APPLICATIONS
- Anxiolytic models without sedation or dependency
- Serotonin metabolism research
- GABA pathway modulation (non-BZD site)
- Immunomodulation - NK cell activity
- Cognitive performance under stress models
RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
GABAergic Anxiolysis Without Sedation
2010Elevated plus-maze and open field tests show anxiolytic effects comparable to diazepam without sedation, motor impairment, or cognitive deficits.
